Background & Context

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic the NHS undertook to contact all extremely vulnerable patients who were considered to be at additional risk from COVID-19. These ‘shielded’ patients have been contacted via letter and advised to remain in self-isolation for 12 weeks.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): Shielded Patients List

The NHS developed the ‘shielded patients list’ (formerly known as the vulnerable patient list) from which a dataset of SNOMED codes was created and was used to identify patients.

The shielded patients list is under frequent review. As COVID-19 and its impact on patients with specific characteristics is further understood, the list is updated.
