EPS overview

The electronic prescription service (EPS) enables prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser of the patient's choice. This makes the prescribing and dispensing process more efficient and convenient for patients and staff.

EPS in remote consultations

EPS provides flexibility and safety in the sending and collection of prescriptions issued during remote consultations.

NHS Digital has produced guidance and information on using EPS in remote consultations. The guidance includes:

  • nominated pharmacies
  • using Phase 4 EPS in place of a nominated pharmacy
  • adding messages
  • urgent prescriptions

It is essential that GPs do not issue prescriptions for a longer than usual duration, to avoid disruption to supply during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TPP sites are also now able to activate EPS Phase 4 functionality to allow prescriptions for non-nominated patients to be sent electronically.
